Manaia bone carving

This is the Early stages of a bone carving from a deer antler that is over 13 years old. I'm not sure how it will polish up when completed. I'm carving this without the assistance of electric tools. It's all carved with hand tools. I'm looking forward to the outcome.

A Sad day

A sad day today. I have  cut the toes off of two different feet on my Gecko I was carving from Totara. I can't say I'm not disappointed. To put a positive spin on it, maybe it wasn't meant to be. No use crying over spilled milk. Life goes on, blah blah blah. I did learn from it though.

My completed pigs tusk! What the image doesn't show is, I decided to singe the edges of the cord to clean up the overall look of the carving.

$70.00NZD

The sticking out of the tongue is an act of defiance in Maoridom but  I perceive it more as a welcoming or greeting or a way to ward off spirits through the fear of sticking out the tongue. I know my interpretation would be considered wrong but this is what I see.

Latest bone carving

Above shows the front and below shows the back of the bone carving. I'm thinking of making one to accompany the male version with a carving to compliment the female. On it's own this particular carving is for sale at $70.00 NZD. I do my own 3 plait,  lashing and binding on 1mm black waxed cord.  If you have a specific cord length I can accommodate for an extra $5.00 NZD.

I've been working n my Gecko carving the last couple of days. I started shaping the head and am pleased with it so far. I will continue working on it for the next few days as I'm  away from Friday -Monday for an exhibition which has one of my bone carvings in. A constant creator, I intend to take some bone with me and use up my days carving. I've got some new designs to carve so am looking forward to carving them.

I will upload some images showing the progress mid next week.
