Birth of a Manaia

Well it has been a while since I last posted something. Due to not being well, in haste I posted that I was going to retire from art. I've decided to slow down instead and keep myself well. The images below show a wood carving of what type of wood I do not know. It is a hardwood, possibly Jarra or Black Maire. The rock base is from White Rock which is approx 56kms from Masterton in the Wairarapa, NZ. The carving is approx 50mm L and the top and bottom of the rock has been polished. The top image is the front, the middle image is the back and the bottom image shows the polished rock.

Finale

Well my art has come to an end. I have decided to sell all of my tools and retire and live a little. Thanks for all the pluses and comments during my short stint on here.

new wood carving

The piece of driftwood I purchased from the arts recycling center the other day is now beginning to take shape. It is a very hard wood. I'm guessing it is Jarra but have my fingers crossed that it's Black Maire. Even my files are working hard to remove the wood. I've spent most of today thinking about the back of the carving and as you can see by the image I have begun work on it. As far as a story for this piece, I still am working on that too. The top image is day two where I have started to add more detailing to the hands etc. The bottom image was from yesterday.

A busy week without any art

Well, I have spent the last week walking my best friend to work each morning. She has one week left before the store closes which puts her out of a job. While in town today I found an arts recycling center and found a small piece of driftwood inside. I'm not sure what type of timber it is, but for it's size is is quite heavy so am thinking it is a hardwood. I gave the lady behind the counter all of the coins I had in my wallet as the piece of wood was in the area where the cost of something is based on a donation. I spent tonight sketching out a design with a possibility of cutting out the main shape tomorrow afternoon.

Abstract carving

Still in it's early stages the carving is finally taking shape. I hope to work on it over the weekend as well.
I like to show the early progress to help the onlooker see the carving grow.
